Madakaripura waterfall is located in Branggah hamlet, Negororejo Village, Lumbang District, Probolinggo Regency, East Java Province, Indonesia. The distance from the center of Probolinggo City is approximately 37 kilometers. This waterfall is said to be the highest waterfall on the island of Java, with a waterfall height reaching 200 meters.
According to history, the Madakaripura waterfall was the meditation place for the great governor of the Majapahit kingdom, Gajah Mada. The name Madakaripura comes from 3 names, namely Mada, taken from the name of an elephant. Kari has the meaning of heritage. Meanwhile, temple means prayer or meditation.
Uniquely, this waterfall is in the form of a cave with a height of approximately 200 meters. And has an area of approximately 25 meters. The waterfall is circular. So, before heading to the main waterfall, we will be greeted by 4 waterfalls. Where, one of them is shaped like a cavity. As you get closer to the waterfall point, the river valley narrows into a kind of canyon.
Before arriving at the location, you will be found selling coats or raincoats. Visitors who do not bring a coat should buy one here. This is important because even though the weather is sunny, around Madakaripura Waterfall it feels as if it is raining. Water not only flows from the main waterfall, but also from the narrow edge of the cliff. At the end of the canyon, you can see a towering waterfall, namely Madakaripura Waterfall. There are several small alcoves around the waterfall, it is said that this is where Gadjah Mada used to meditate.
Visitors who bring cars or buses must put their vehicles in the first parking area. This parking area is specifically for cars or buses because the road to the levy post is quite narrow. The footpath route will be next to the river flowing from Madakaripura Waterfall. This river is in a hilly valley. Throughout the journey, the green cliffs on either side of the river always faithfully accompany the journey. To reach the waterfall location, visitors have to walk for about half an hour from the vehicle parking area. The nearest parking area can only be reached by motorbike.
